Agility Training

Information

Perhaps you’ve seen agility on TV and thought "my dog could do that"…and you are probably right! Agility is a fun sport you can do with your dog that involves negotiating an obstacle course comprised of jumps, tunnels, tires, weave poles, a teeter totter and other equipment.

In our beginner agility classes, we will give you an introduction to all of the most commonly used obstacles and teach you the skills to help you and your dog discover a fun and exciting new game to play together.

Along the way, you will also learn games and tricks you can do with your dog at home to help improve your agility skills.

The emphasis in this class will be on FUN and safety. We hope to make agility class the highlight of the week for both of you.

All sorts of dogs play agility, your dog need only be reasonably fit, non people/dog aggressive and have some basic obedience - come when called, sit, lie down, etc. If you are not sure, please speak to us and we will be happy to evaluate your dog before you sign up for class.

During the good weather, we train at Playful Paws Kennel & Doggie Spa on Campbell Road, just north of Orillia. Classes usually start every 4 weeks or so; give us a call and we’ll tell you what we have available.

Winter classes are held indoors at 3835 Campbell Road, RR 3, Orillia, just 5 buildings South of us. Winter class times are extremely limited so again, you’ll have to call for info.

If you are not sure which level to enter, please speak to us.

AN (Absolute Newbies): for those dogs who are brand-new to the sport

BBN (Barely Beyond Newbies): you have taken a few classes somewhere, your dog has done most of the equipment, but still has a ways to go

JAR (Just About Ready): your dog is reasonably competent on most equipment, but lacks skills in certain areas, such as weave poles, contacts, teeter issues, etc.

RTG (Ready to Go): you and your dog are ready to trial, or currently trialing and you are working on honing your handling skills and improving obstacle performance

BIO (Bring It On): you are currently competing at least at the Advanced level and want to bring your game to a new level

Cost

All of the above classes are scheduled in sets of 4 weeks each for a total of $100.00 to be paid at the first class. If WE have to cancel a class for whatever reason a make-up class will be added at the end of the set. There are no refunds/make-ups if you skip a class, other than by prior arrangement.

New classes start every few weeks, so please call or email us regarding availability.

About Our Instructor

Our agility classes are taught by Fran Jensen, who has been competing for 12 years and teaching for the last 7. She competes with 6 year old Hailey, a registered Jack Russell Terrier, who is running at the Masters level. Her 11 year old JRT Dee Dee passed away suddenly this March, having attained her ATChC (Agility Trial Champion of Canada), Silver Award of Merit and just a few runs shy of her "Gold". Sadly, just a few months later, she also lost her 17 year old "Jack Daniels" terrier, Spanky who had been retired for 3 years, but also earned his ATChC.

On a more positive note, Fran recently adopted a young JRT?, Rory, who is guesstimated to be about 1 1/2 years old. He is still very much a 'wild child', but a blast to have around and will certainly present Fran with some new training challenges! He has very big paws to fill.

Fran’s objective is to make agility day the "best day of the week for you AND your dog". Our students say their dogs are literally bouncing around the car on the way to class.

Classes are small, so you will have lots of time to work with your best friend and Fran is a happy, upbeat instructor, making class time a highly positive experience for both of you. Your dog will learn using lots of treat, toys and praise, with no harsh corrections.
